Adebayor, Adebayor, give him the ball, and he will score
We all know Harry Redknapp loves the Sky Sports TV crew as anytime he gets the chance he’ll be in the car, window down at the gates of Suprs’ traning ground. For me I suspect he’ll be there come next summer’s transfer window, stating that the club have just reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign fans’ player of the season and the club’s top goalscorer (you’ll see come the end of the season) Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent deal.
With every new club there has been a new haircut. So of course, with him being at his sixth club there has been six haircuts. More importantly for the former Togo captain, he has made a mark at most of his former employers.
He started at French outfit Metz where he came from the B squad and made it to the first team within his first year at the club. He spent two seasons in the first team set-up and did so well that Monaco came calling.
He moved to Monaco, off the back of the club finishing runners-up in Ligue 1. During his time with the club he had some Ups making it to the Champions League final in 2004. But also he had some Downs, such as his troubles with new manager Francesco Guidolin, who when he first met Adebayor said, ‘Who are you, I’ve never seen you play.’ Someone should have told the new manager to watch Monaco in the two seasons prior to his appointment. After continuously not getting selected by Guidolin, Adebayor only had one thing on his mind; to move on and start playing football.
He went on to sign for Arsenal and once again he had ups followed by one or two Downs. For example, he had a bust up with then team mate Nicklas Bendtner at the end of the 5-1 League Cup defeat to Tottenham. He thought all his troubles were over when Manchester City put in a transfer bid for him, but once again he had some problems when his relationship with Roberto Mancini started to deteriorate.
Once again though he found a path out and was hoping his loan move to Real Madrid would see him start to show everyone what he really was made of. But after just six months out on loan he returned back to Manchester, but as you might have guessed didn’t stay too long and was again loaned out.
This time though it could all be so different as Adebayor seems to have found a new home at White Heart Lane.
Since joining Spurs on a season long loan from City ‘Baby Kanu’ has fitted right in. He has featured in five games, scored three goals and assisting another three making him joint top goal scorer at the club and top of the assists charts. Tallying them both up makes him so far this season Tottenham’s most effective player and he looks like he’s enjoying his football again. Plus, his manager and team mates also look very happy with the addition of the ever-smiling striker. At the age of just 27, it seems he’s still got at least seven years left at the top level and may just be coming into the peak of his career.
Put those stats and facts together with the following; Tottenham have only two strikers at the club in Defoe and Pavlyuchenko, with the latter most likely to leave at the next transfer window, it would leave Tottenham with only one front man and surely looking for at least one more striker.
You then have to ponder the question, with only two years left on his contract (come next summers transfer window) Manchester City will want him off the wage bill as Mancini has already said the big front man isn’t in his plans, why wouldn’t Daniel Levy and Harry Redknapp look right under their noses’ for their new striker?
He could prove to be a steal for them, as City won’t be too bothered about trying to recoup any of the money they spent on him, because let’s face it they simply don’t need it. And Spurs won’t have to bother gelling in another new player as by that time he will have been playing week-in, week-out at White Hart Lane.
The big question when it comes down to it is, will Adebayor play nice this season, will he get along with his colleagues, manager, coaching staff and even the tea lady? If so, then we may just be seeing a great partnership in Emmanuel Adebayor and Tottenham Hotspur. Not just this season but possibly for seasons to come.
