There are very few people who, as fans of football, would turn down the opportunity to manage Futbol Club Barcelona. However, as Premier League followers have witnessed at Manchester United this season, it can sometimes contain more pitfalls than positives.

Throughout history there have been sporting sides with members in it who are often an after thought or deemed to not be as important as others. The headlines following Barcelona’s Champions League tie with Manchester City largely centred around Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi but there would be a good argument to suggest that their goalkeeper Victor Valdes was as, if not more, important in the Catalan’s win.

This season was always going to be one of unpredictability. With the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson the seat at the head of the Premier League managers’ table was vacant for the first time in decades. The return of Jose Mourinho at Chelsea seemingly left this seat open for him to succeed and on the evidence this season this theory would seem correct.

With a higher scrabble score for his name (eight to seven), we can’t help but look at the numbers and think Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to win the 2013 Ballon d’Or. The trick will be repeating the feat and proving the vote wasn’t won more from sympathy of having to compete against the man that had won each of the previous four titles.

Later on today the 2013 European Super Cup will be competed for between Bayern Munich and Chelsea. Following yesterday’s look at how the two sides won their respective European trophies today we are looking a little more closely at both sides.

It’s just days away and you can almost taste it, the return of the best league in the World, no, not the English Premier league, no, not even the Bundesliga. It’s not the Italian; don’t be stupid, it’s of course the Spanish Primera División – La Liga.

An old adage of the transfer window suggests teams and managers should try to do their business as early and as quickly as possible. It is perhaps something of a ridiculed football cliché, yet it may be the summer transfer window of 2013 that proves it still holds plenty of truth. A lack of urgency could be what stops Arsenal from securing the signature of the much-coveted Gonzalo Higuain.

When Jose Mourinho left Chelsea in 2007 he left a void in the English Premier League that has not been filled despite numerous attempts. That cheeky smile, that twinkle in his eye when he knew his plans were working and his overall engrossing nature made him a hugely controversial character. His chance to return as manager at Chelsea arose this summer and it will be fascinating to see how his second spell in the England will go.
